"Right after his studies at the Academy for Music of his native city of Sofia, the Bulgarian tenor was engaged at the National Opera House there, where he could demonstrate his extraordinary quality in roles as various as the Duke inRigolett, Lindoro in Rossini'sItalian Girl in Algier, Pollione in Bellini'sNorm, Fernando in Donizetti'sLa Favorit, Foresto in Verdi'sAttil und Radames inAïd. Before starting his international career, he first completed his studies in Vienna and Rome, where he was fostered especially by the great Bulgarian bass Boris Christoff.
In 1988, Boiko Zvetanov won the prestigious International Voice Competitions of Sofia and Bilbao, leading to important successes also as a concert and oratorio singer, e.g. in Russia, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Malta and France; especially as soloist in Verdi's ""Messa da Reqiem"" in Paris he left a magnificent impression. 1990-92 he performed with great success at the Vienna State Opera as Italian Singer both in ""Rosenkavalier"" and ""Capriccio"" by Richard Strauss. 1991/92 he appeared also in St. Gallen as Riccardo in Verdi's ""Ballo in Maschera"".
Since 1991 he has been member of the Zurich opera house, where he has performed the major roles of his fach since. To mention but a couple of his most exciting performances there: Canio (I Pagliacci), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Alvaro (Forza del Destino), Gustavo (Ballo in Maschera), Lenski (Eugen Onegin), Rodolfo (Luisa Miller), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Maurizio (Adriana Lecouvreur), Luigi (Il Tabarro), Grigori (Boris Godunov) and Pollione (Norma). Moreover, he had brilliant successes also with extremely difficult and therefore rarely performed roles like Arnoldo (Guillaume Tell), Arturo (Puritani), Gualtiero (Il Pirata) and Sobinin in Glinka's A Life for the Tsar. The 1999 Zurich production of Wolf-Ferrari's Sly, where he shared the title role with José Carreras, eventually became one of his most overwhelming successes.
His vast number of guest appearances includes Gustavo (Ballo in Maschera) at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Valencia and Graz, Pollione (Norma) at Opéra Bastille Paris, as well as Semperoper Dresden and repeatedly the Liceu Barcelona, with his debut taking place as Calaf (""Turandot"") in October 1999 on the occasion of the official reopening celebration of the opera house. He also appeared at the opera houses of Kopenhagen, Karlsruhe, Mexico City, Praha, Stockholm, Bergen, Bratislava, Cairo, Vienna, Bilbao, Lille, Messina, Wiesbaden, Krefeld, Budapest, Moscow and Madrid.
Among his recent successes there are to be noted: Verdi's La Forza del Destino and Un Ballo in Maschera at the Munich National Theatre as well as Manrico (Trovatore) in Hamburg and Edinburgh and his US debut in 2000 as Calaf (""Turandot"") in Tulsa. In October 2000 he received overwhelming applause as Calaf and Enzo (""La Gioconda"") during a Japan tour of Sofia State Opera, likewise some months ago as Maurizio (Adriana Lecouvreur) at the Bolshoi in Moscow.
Boiko Zvetanov has sang his more than 50 roles with a number of world-class conductors like Riccardo Chailly, Bruno Bartoletti, Lamberto Gardelli, Marcello Viotti, Ralf Weikert, Carlo Franci, Nicola Rescigno and Nello Santi. His more recent CD recordings include an aria recital as well as complete recordings of Verdi's Trovatore, Rigoletto and Attila.
